WHAT IS HYBRID?

Toyota Hybrids are known as ‘Hybrid-electric’ vehicles because they incorporate two energy sources: a petrol engine and an electric motor. These two engines operating independently of each other is what marks Toyota’s ‘full’ Hybrid system out as different from so called ‘mild’ Hybrid cars. Toyota Hybrids can use electric power to pull away and even cruise at speeds up to 50 km/h. The result? Zero fuel consumption, zero tailpipe emissions and practically silent drive for up to 50% of your urban journeys.

ARE HYBRIDS EXPENSIVE? ARE THEY EXPENSIVE TO MAINTAIN?

Despite the fact that the Hybrid system itself is slightly more expensive than the conventional one, Toyota Hybrids not only save you money by using less fuel but are also more affordable to service than you may think. For example, in case of Hybrids, break pads are wearing less and as a result maintenance costs are up to 5% lower. The electric motor and battery components in a Toyota Hybrid practically do not require maintenance, and as proven technologies they are more reliable than complex internal combustion engines. In fact, some mechanical elements such as the clutch, alternator and starter motor are removed completely, further reducing the risk of unforeseen costs in the future.

DO HYBRIDS HAVE TO BE CHARGED?

If you have this kind of questions, remember that Toyota Hybrids have no cables, no plugs and no inconvenience. When the battery runs low in a Toyota Hybrid, excess power from the engine charges it back up again. That’s not all. Our Hybrids feature regenerative braking, so when you brake or coast, a generator produces electricity to be stored in the battery for later. So finally you do not need to charge the battery from any outsource.

ARE HYBRIDS POWERFUL?

Toyota Hybrids switch seamlessly between two power sources, a petrol engine and an electric motor, to give you response when you need it. A Hybrid car’s electric motor delivers an instant hit of torque (or pulling power) when you press the accelerator, while at higher speeds or when overtaking on the highway it works in tandem with the petrol engine for a strong boost of power.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MILD AND FULL HYBRIDS?

All Hybrid cars are powered by a combination of an internal combustion engine and electric motors. When compared with mild Hybrids, the main benefit of Toyota’s full Hybrid cars is the fact that its two power sources operate entirely independently of each other. Mild Hybrid cars only use their electric motors to support the engine during acceleration and cruising – the electric motor cannot power the car on its own. While in a full or self-charging Toyota Hybrid, you can enjoy pure electric power for up to 50% of your city journeys and when cruising at speeds up to 50 km/h. At higher speeds or when overtaking on the highway, the petrol engine and electric motors work together to give you a strong boost of power.

ARE HYBRIDS MORE DIFFICULT TO DRIVE?

There’s nothing complicated about Hybrid car technology. In fact, a Toyota Hybrid may be even easier to drive than the car you’re used to. You see, our self-charging Hybrid system controls itself, switching seamlessly between quiet electric drive, responsive petrol power, or both together for a stronger boost of power when you need it. No levers, buttons or dials. What’s more, all Toyota Hybrids are equipped with automatic transmissions, so you can slot the gear lever into Drive and settle back for the smooth, relaxing and comfortable Hybrid experience.

HOW DO HYBRIDS PERFORM IN WINTER TIME?

You’ll be pleased to hear that driving a Toyota Hybrid in winter is the same as driving a conventional car in winter. For peace of mind, new Toyota Hybrids are equipped with Traction Control and Vehicle Stability Control systems, which help to maintain traction and control on slippery or icy road surfaces. If you want a Hybrid to perform in more extreme conditions, Toyota offers Hybrid all-wheel drive (AWD) models in RAV4 Hybrid line-up that adds a second, rear-mounted electric motor to power the rear wheels, for enhanced grip and stability in all conditions.

ARE HYBRIDS CAPABLE OF AWD?

Although most Hybrids are front-wheel drive, as it is mentioned above, there are now all-wheel drive – or 4x4 – Toyota Hybrids within the range for those who need extra off-road or all-weather capability. The new RAV4 Hybrid is equipped with an advanced AWD-i system that is engineered to provide a much stronger performance in challenging circumstances and secure handling in slippery conditions. In addition to the combined Toyota Hybrid engine and electric motor powering the front wheels, models like the RAV4 Hybrid AWD add a second, rear-mounted electric motor to power the rear wheels. This allows up to 30% of the torque to be distributed to the rear wheels to give a sure-footed performance when pulling away on loose, slippery surfaces.
